ARTIST STATEMENT

My work aims to create a reinvented urban reality, through the use of projection.

Visual and conceptual site-specific works are used throughout in order to explore the indoor and outdoor environment within contemporary art practices. The work is categorised as multi-media, as the majority of the work is done using data projectors and broken mirrors to create immersive installations.

Digital still-images are taken of specifically chosen urban areas, for their dull and typical appearance. The taken still-images are then edited using PicsArt and Adobe Photoshop in order to portray a fragmented perception of a typical urban setting. The editing process includes various different aspects, these include: blurring specific parts of the image and adding richer colours, some still-images have also undergone duplication. These three developments are used in order to enhance the aesthetic view of the piece. When projected using multiple projectors simultaneously,

the outcome of the editing process becomes the starting point for a reinvented urban reality.

Coupled with the use of broken mirrors situated in one corner of the room and the three projections themselves, the whole of the installation creates an alternative version on the urban environment.

By creating different perspectives this new reality is created and as the viewer moves around the installation the projected pieces will reflect through the mirrors continuously changing in appearance giving different perspectives with each step. In this way the onlooker of the piece becomes instrumental in the creation of a reinvented urban reality.
